Why I Chose my Major by Taylor - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
I first heard of occupational therapy in 8th grade while in a careers exploration class. I later researched more about this career and found characteristics that I really enjoy. In high school, I explored this career by attending the Health Occupation and Med Term classes at the Vocational Center. I did clinical rotations with occupational therapists at the hospital and also started working at a nursing home with hopes to see how the occupational therapists worked with patients. My Grandma also impacted my choice in picking occupational therapy. When I was very young, my grandma had a stroke. She was in the hospital for a month and spent a lot of time in occupational therapy. My mom told me during that time, they most trusted her occupational therapist and she had a major impact on helping my Grandma come home. It felt like it was meant to be a career for me when I later linked to this occupation.
I take great pride in helping others and my community. The thought of a career helping people get back to every day living and families get their loved ones back home seems a lot less like a job and more like a fulfilling life. I look forward to learning more about the occupational therapy career through college and having a career in this field of work in the future.
