The Perfect Classroom by Taylor - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
The classroom environment that a student has to be in for school does have an effect on the quality of the course and the ability for the student ie. me, to succeed. The ideal classroom would have a devoted and personable teacher, a challenging course, and students that actually want to be there and learn. There are of course many other factors that are important for a positive classroom environment, but I am considering these three to be the most influential in my success as a student.
The teacher, to me, is literally the most important variable to the ideal classroom. A teacher can make or break the subject they are teaching. A teacher who loves teaching will be energetic and positive in the classroom and always uplifting. Hands-on, verbal, and visual teaching would all be styles that a quality teacher would apply to his/her classroom. Having this type of teacher would help me succeed in my education, because having a teacher who I know cares about the subject and cares about me as student, allows me to really delve into the subject and coursework.
A challenging course sounds like a nightmare to non-committed students, but to me a challenging course is necessary. If I am never challenged in the classroom, then there is no way for me or any other student to move forward or be successful. A challenging course causes one to have to put in more effort and use their own ingenuity to move forward in the class. With no challenge in the course, I'm sitting there learning nothing which is no way acceptable to me as an individual who prides herself on her love for learning.
Lastly, having students who actually want to learn and absorb the subject in the classroom would be fantastic. If only three out of thirty students want to be there, it is hard for the three students who want to further their education to succeed in that goal. From past and current experience, students who don't want to be there are distracting, disrespectful, and/or unwilling to follow any rules in the classroom. A classroom filled with bright an determined students would be perfect for my ideal classroom, because when others around me want to succeed in their educational goals as much as I do, it is the greatest motivator.
This ideal classroom I'm sure exists in many places, but it would be beneficial to me if I could actually be in one instead of just writing about it.
