Transition to Success by Taylor - April 2019 Scholarship Essay
The transition from high school to college is unlike any other I have ever experienced. The autonomy you have in high school is minuscule compared to that of college, and I believe this creates a challenge for some students when it comes to doing homework and assignments individually. Teachers in high school tend to elaborate and explain things in a way so that students can understand them, and a lot of teachers also prefer to read and create assignments and tests straight from the textbook. Whether that be for their benefit regarding grading, or the student's benefit regarding studying, I am not sure, but because college is so different in this aspect, it created a challenge for me when trying to learn and understand material.
I am a pre-nursing major, which means that the majority of my classes include biology. Like any other major, there is always a new lesson every day and in order to understand this new lesson, students must understand the lessons before because the majority of the time, the information builds up to one overall topic. When you have limited time and many other classes, it becomes a struggle to keep up with the material from every lecture. To overcome this challenge, I engaged in social clubs and expanded my circle. Now, you are probably thinking, how are more people going to help your already crowded and confused problem at hand? Well, the clubs I looked into were geared toward my desired degree. This is actually what inspired me to change my degree choice from biology to nursing last semester. I also attended study sessions taught by friends and people that I knew were also in my similar classes because the sense of comfortability made it easier to retain the information. I also learned new study habits from counselors and professors in my degree department as well as other classes I am required to take. Having almost finished my first year of college, I have had some rough patches, but I have ultimately learned skills that are vital to my success here at Ouachita Baptist University and I couldn't be more thankful for all of the people who have helped me along the way.
