What I want to be when I grow-up by Taylor - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

Ever since I was a little girl I never truly had my heart set on what I wanted to be when I “Grew Up.” First, I wanted to be a firefighter, then a chef, and even a veterinarian. I made my way through the list of what every kid thinks they want to be. Now I am grown up and I feel as if it is time to finally figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life: teach.
I have always had some type of underlying passion for leadership and helping others. This could just be me feeding into my astrological sign description or me really trying to figure out what I’m good at. Leadership has had a huge impact on my life as I have been captain of the field hockey and softball team at my school and I hold board positions in Key Club, National Honor Society, and Mini-THON. These aspects of my life helped me decide what occupation I want to obtain.
The idea of being a teacher wasn’t only sparked by my personal interests and talents. Many people in my family are teachers and some were even coaches. My mom, aunt, and both of my grandmothers were teachers. Two of my uncles are teachers and both coach football. All of these different teachers in my life helped me make the decision to teach. To me, it feels like I am carrying on a family tradition but I am creating my own story.
I chose the school, Millersville University, to further my education. The main reason I chose this school was because of its renowned Elementary Education department. This school gives me the ability to double major in elementary education and special education. The double major allows for more work opportunities in the future and makes me a better candidate for jobs. Millersville also offers a variety of minors including coaching. Having a coaching minor opens up more job options and helps me accomplish my dreams. I would love to not only teach, but also coach field hockey. This is a career that supports me financially and allows for me to give back to my community and the youth in it. It is important to me that I leave some type of impact on my community to improve the quality of learning and of life.
