The Lessons of a Diary by Taylor - July 2013 Scholarship Essay

“The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank is one of the most compelling historical works ever written. There is nothing better than reading a daily account of someone’s life while they faced one of the most horrific events in world history.  Not only did she reveal specific World War II events during the German occupation in the Netherlands and its capital city, Anne also teaches us about her struggle to survive while hiding in the Secret Annex with her family and friends. Anne’s diary is very emotional in every sense of the word because it teaches us about her life as a 13 year old girl, her love for others, and her belief that all people can be good despite their differences.
Anne Frank obviously did not know that her diary would become a teaching tool in schools across the nation and we are fortunate as American students to have this afforded to us.  Although some individuals may consider the diary’s content too explicit for middle school grade levels, I believe students at this age can actually relate to Anne’s words and find compassion for a girl with similar teenage beliefs and values and who faced horrendous hardships while protecting them.  Because the diary is a true testament of Anne’s experience, it can be used today to change society’s prejudice behaviors in order promote tolerance for one another.  This is definitely one of the best books that I have ever read in school because of its powerful life lesson.
