A Night Owl: Why I stay up late by Taylor - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
I consider myself to be a night owl over a morning person. It is easier for me to stay up late rather than drag myself out of bed early. If I have an alarm set and something I need to do then I will get up but I'm not saying I will be happy to be out of bed.
The first reason I am a night owl is because I simply am too busy to be going to bed at a decent time. I have sports, extracurricular activities, and school work to do. Most activities after school only go till 5 pm but sometimes I have a game that won’t end until 7 pm. I have had night games that end at 9 pm. I have gotten so adapted to staying up late doing homework or studying that the times that I don’t have homework to stay up and complete I still am unable to go to bed yet because I’m not tired. School disrupts our natural sleep-wake cycle which results in different periods for everyone.
Another reason I am a night owl is because I like to stay up and still be involved in what is going on. Most members of my family are night owls so they stay up late most nights. My friends are always up doing things over the weekend so I am out late with them. The majority of my friends are night owls resulting in us all staying up late together whether at a sleepover or texting each other.
I wouldn’t count myself out of being a morning person. I think I just like to sleep and am always tired. Also, it depends on what I am waking up in the morning to do. If I am awake to go do a sport or hang out with friends I am happy and don’t have a problem with being awake. However, if I am awake because my parents thought that I should be up then I am not always the happiest. I want to try and be awake more but also get more sleep. It is not good to be awake so late but teenagers need between 7-9 hours of sleep a night. I know I am able to change my ways if I force myself to follow a schedule.
