Animals by Taylor - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
I am sure that every little girl wanted to be a veterinarian when they grow up, but like most passions and hobbies, they tend to grow out of it. Since I was little I have grown up with three cats, two dogs, two birds, a hamster, and a number of fish that I cannot even count on my fingers and toes. Of course, this was over a span of my 17 years of living, but all my pets made my love for animals strong. While living with what my mom likes to call, "the zoo" I have experienced a Yorkie with diabetes, nurtured a foster kitten back to health (also became a foster failure because we HAD to keep him), nursed a 5-week old baby blue macaw, and am still caring for my other Yorkie with a collapsed trachea. I guess you can say that caring for animals was just second nature to me. Unlike most little girls, that love never died out, it was something in my life that remained constant and has yet to change.
Throughout high school I struggled with not knowing what I wanted to do in the future, and believe me, college was always the last thing on my mind. But I always knew that I was going to work hard so I could reach any of the goals I dreamt of. Not until Junior year was when I knew at least the path I wanted to go down which was Pre-Medicine. I applied to a new high school for junior and senior year which had a program that was strongly career based. This was the opportunity I needed, from that point, I knew that this was my year. While I was attending my new school in the Pre-Medicine program, I volunteered at the animal shelter on the weekends. It was such a rewarding experience that I still continue to this day. Not only do I find this as a respite for myself, but it is a great opportunity to find a love for something new.
The word ‘animals’ have motivated me to live a life to help others and even furry friends. I know that attending college will give me those opportunities to follow my passions of taking care of animals and expanding my dreams of becoming a veterinarian.
