The Art of Communication by Taylor - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Writing yields opportunity for creation. If the roles were switched I would teach the subject of English and Writing. The thing about writing is there is no “yes” or “no” answer to what is freely written about. There is a proper way to write, but not a governance on ways one must process stories. It would be up to my students to format the way in which they write and my job will be to guide them into writing most effectively. English is comparable to art. Art is an expression and the way humans most easily express themselves is through their words. Art holds appreciated beauty and emotional power just like the things that we write. What we write speaks to our emotions, mental processes, reactions, thoughts, experiences, and more. I would teach English simply because I love art. I would teach English because I would want my students to be able to communicate their inner feelings and thoughts in a way that can impact their readers. I love reading other's writing because each time I read it, it's an open door to experience something new and put yourself in someone else's shoes. I would love to teach writing because each day in the classroom will be unpredictable. You never know what you'll discover while reading a book, and essay, a paper, a memoir, a magazine, or even a newspaper in class or what each unique students’ response will be to those things.
A person can be told the answer to a math equation but they cannot be told how they feel about a product. The borders that sometimes come with more mathematical and analytical subjects do not always apply in terms of English. Though formatting writing to prove a thesis, state an argument, or relay complicated facts can be hard I would strive to make writing the most enjoyable experience for my students that it possibly could be. It's important not to see writing as a task of pulling thoughts out of one's head and relaying them to paper, but amalgamating their views of oneself, the world, and others to create an experience of the words.
Real change and innovation are able to occur when individuals are taught to effectively communicate their thoughts. Ideas can be relayed solutions can be found, minds can be opened, and more with simple writing. I would want to be the person to coach my students into becoming the next inventors, creators, managers, and process coordinators of the next biggest and solution solving ideas. I would take my teaching as if the world depended on it because to a certain extent it does. I would teach others to write because I love to write and I know when shown the path to their own unique way of doing so, all of my students would to.
