Important Lessons from Educators by Taylor - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
From birth we are taught lessons from many different sources. It has been calculated that U.S. children, varying on which state they reside in, will spend 16,450 hours in school from kindergarten through high school. To put that in perspective there are 8,760 hours in a year and 1,265 of those hours are spent in school. In these formative years we spend a large portion of our time with educators who play a huge role in the decisions we will make in the future.
The importance of education varies for everyone, to me it’s one of the most important weapons in a human’s arsenal. Education is so important because it not only equips people with the knowledge to better understand the world around them, but it can be used as an escape from a situation that someone does not want to be in. I come from a small town with a population of 2,643 people. Since a young age I have come to the realization that this is not the area where I want to reside for the rest of my life. With this mind set in place I learned through teachers that the best way to get where I want to go I can use the resource of education to get there. Through the years I have learned the important lesson that becoming educated is not only a government fielded responsibility, but also a personal one. Teens are not taking advantage of the free education that is being provided to them or the resources that are at their disposal. Being instilled with the knowledge at a young age to not only be grateful of the education that is being freely given to me, but to also take advantage of the resources that are at my disposal will help me get where I want to go in life.
Although I have had the fortune of learning from many great educators in my life there are two that have really left the biggest mark. Mr. Carroll has been my history, government, and economics teacher for 3 years now. He is an individual who I deeply respect and has taught me many lessons in the past 3 years. He has taught me to respect others opinions even if they do not match up with my own. Another phenomenal teacher that I have had is Mrs. Purvee she was my math teacher for 3 years. Not only has she managed to wrap my head around a subject that I can easily get lost in, she genuinely cares about all of her students. She is heavily involved in many clubs at school and the mother of 4 children, yet she will still stay after school with any student that is having difficulty grasping a concept. Both of these teachers are different in personality and teacher styles, but they both agree that education is the most important weapon a young person can have. They have both driven home the lessons that education is not only a person responsibility, but an amazing resourced provided to all of us that must be taken advantage of.
In conclusion, the lessons taught and learned by teachers are some of the most important a young person will absorb in their life. Educated is a personal responsibility for students and great way to take someone to as many different heights as they allow it to. The resources presented to us need to be taken advantage of because this is the time in our life were we will have the widest variety of options at our disposal. The lessons I have learned from the educators in my life will be carried with me for years to come.
