Future First Generation College Graduate by Tatiana - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my academic journey, I have faced many challenges that have tested my resolve and determination. One particular experience stands out as both difficult and transformative: my struggle with public speaking during high school. This challenge not only pushed me out of my comfort zone but also taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and self-improvement.

It all began in my sophomore year when I was required to take a speech class. As a naturally introverted person, the thought of speaking in front of my classmates filled me with dread. I remember the first assignment vividly—a simple presentation about a topic of our choice. Despite preparing thoroughly, I was overwhelmed with anxiety. When it was my turn to speak, my hands shook, my voice wavered, and I struggled to make eye contact with the audience. It was a humbling experience.

After that day, I knew I had to overcome this fear. Public speaking is an essential skill, especially for someone like me who aspires to study political science and engage in meaningful discussions about societal issues. I realized that if I wanted to succeed in my future career, I needed to become comfortable with expressing my ideas in front of others.

To tackle this challenge, I decided to take a proactive approach. I began by seeking help from my speech teacher, who was incredibly supportive. She provided me with constructive feedback and techniques to improve my delivery. One of the most helpful tips she gave me was to practice speaking in front of a mirror. This allowed me to focus on my body language and facial expressions, which are crucial components of effective communication.

In addition to practicing alone, I joined the school's debate team. This was a significant step for me, as it forced me to engage in public speaking regularly. The debate team environment was both competitive and supportive, which pushed me to improve. My teammates and coach were always there to offer advice and encouragement, which made a huge difference in my confidence.

Through countless debates and practice sessions, I gradually became more comfortable with public speaking. I learned to manage my anxiety by focusing on the message I wanted to convey rather than on my nervousness. I also discovered the power of storytelling in engaging an audience, which made my presentations more compelling and less daunting.

As I continued to work on my public speaking skills, I noticed a positive change in my overall academic performance. I became more active in class discussions and more willing to share my ideas. This newfound confidence extended beyond the classroom, influencing other areas of my life. I felt more empowered to participate in community events and volunteer opportunities, where I could use my voice to advocate for causes I care about.

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the challenge it presented. Overcoming my fear of public speaking taught me that growth often comes from stepping outside of our comfort zones. It also reinforced the importance of perseverance and seeking support from others. I learned that it is okay to ask for help and that collaboration can lead to personal development.

As I prepare to enter college as a freshman, I am excited to continue honing my public speaking skills. I believe that my background as a Black and Hispanic woman will bring a unique perspective to the political science field. I am eager to engage with diverse viewpoints and contribute to discussions that promote understanding and inclusivity. My experience with public speaking has prepared me to take on these challenges with confidence and resilience.

In conclusion, the journey to overcoming my fear of public speaking was not easy, but it was incredibly rewarding. It taught me valuable lessons about self-improvement, perseverance, and the power of communication. I am proud of how far I have come and look forward to using these skills in my future academic and professional endeavors. This experience has shown me that with determination and support, we can overcome any challenge and achieve our goals.
