The Road Ahead by Tashia - May 2021 Scholarship Essay
In a way, I feel like the educational system overlooked me. My Algebra teacher knew something was different but didn’t know what. I remember him asking me if everything was alright in my household. I was naive and laughed it off. I realize now that I have to work twice as hard to focus and concentrate on my school work. I could possibly have an overlooked learning disability.
This became clear to me once I became an adult learner. Sometimes, I’m up late at night crying because it’s hard to get through all the pages of the reading assignments I have. I remember taking an exam and not being able to concentrate fully because the student behind me was chewing so loudly. It felt like the words on the exam were melting off of the paper. I was able to push forward and keep going even when I felt like giving up.
I managed to make the Dean’s List almost every semester. A big turnaround from my High School days when I graduated with a 1.4322 GPA. This scholarship means that someone recognized my achievements and the amount of work I put hard in daily to overcome my shortcomings. It would mean that someone acknowledged me and all of my hard work. It means someone believed in me enough to invest in my future. Thank you for reading.
