Opportunities within Knowledge by Taryn - November 2023 Scholarship Essay
As I walked across the road I took a deep breath. I was nervous. I was about to walk into my first college class at the age of fifteen. I opened the door and was greeted by a cheery woman. The woman told me what classroom I was supposed to be in. I walked to the classroom slowly feeling as though my feet weighed a ton. I took my seat and looked around. I was the youngest person in the room. But I had to remember why I was there: to learn.
Knowledge is a powerful tool. I haven’t always realized just how powerful it is. I used to dread going to school. I knew I needed to change my mindset. Since changing my mindset I’ve gotten an overall 3.997 unweighted GPA, I am the Social Science Sterling Scholar at my school, I am the Treasurer of the National Honors Society, I will have 20 college credits completed at the end of this semester, and I’ve done numerous hours of community service.
Knowledge to me equals opportunity. Opportunities to make new connections, to make fewer mistakes, and to thrive in the world. I’ve made great friends knowing different languages. I’ve avoided mistakes by learning through my peers. And I will continue to gain knowledge until I’m confident that I will be able to thrive in the world. So, why do I want to go to college? I want to go to college to gain more knowledge and for the opportunities that come with it.
