In the Next Ten Years by Taryn - March 2020 Scholarship Essay
As I near the end of my senior year and high school graduation draws closer and closer, I have been planning out my future.
I have always been fascinated in the medical field, and in high school I came to realize my true passion for nursing. My favorite classes were biology and anatomy because I enjoy learning about what makes people, people. These courses have inspired me to pursue a career in nursing.
I have been accepted into University of Portland’s School of Nursing Class of 2024, and I plan to attend this fall. In college, I hope to explore different areas of nursing to figure out which type suits me best. I am currently interested in many different specialties, some of which are: emergency room, intensive care unit, neonatal, and oncology nursing. I plan on volunteering in nearby hospitals during the summers of college to gain additional experience for my future.
When I graduate in the spring of 2024, I hope to get a job in one of Portland’s hospitals and begin my nursing career. I would like to stay and work in the community that has been so supportive to my family and me. My dad was diagnosed with colon cancer in August 2019. The oncology nurses that have supported my dad through his chemotherapy treatments have been a blessing in our lives. We appreciate the positive energy the nurses show, and the warm environment they have created for us. Today, on March 10th, 2020, my dad was determined to be cancer free!I have been able to see firsthand the impact nurses have, on not only their patients, but the patients’ families as well. I look forward to the opportunity to make a difference in other people’s lives.
In 10 years, I will be 27 years old, and I will have been out of college for 6 years. By this time, I hope to have been working in a hospital in Portland for several years, seizing each and every day to give back to the community that has given so much to me.
