Mr. Taron-tino Taking Over Hollywood By Storm by Taron - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

When I reach college, my intention is to major in film and television production. My aspiration is to carve a path for myself in the film industry, where I can direct, produce, and write my own films. As I become more entrenched in the industry, I hope to establish my own distribution company focused on acquiring and distributing unique independent films, which often struggle to find proper exposure and promotion.

Choosing film and television production as my major is not an easy decision to articulate; it is rooted in a multitude of reasons. First and foremost, I have a genuine passion for films. It may sound simple, but my love for cinema is profound and integral to my life. Film is a unique art form that allows for the visual storytelling of diverse narratives, transporting audiences into different worlds. The freedom to explore any story or genre captivates me. In my leisure time, I immerse myself in movies, even those that are less mainstream or have lower ratings on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb—my enthusiasm for film has no boundaries.

A pivotal moment that shaped my passion for film was when my grandparents took me to the movie theater for the first time to watch Frozen. I instantly fell in love with Olaf's (the talking snowman's) energy and charisma, which left a lasting impression on me. My love for the movie led me to rewatch it countless times just to see Olaf on screen again. This unforgettable experience inspired me to visit the movie theaters weekly and nurtured my cinephilia. Ultimately, it ignited my dream of becoming a filmmaker to tell stories that resonate with others the way Frozen did for me.

I find beauty and inspiration in every film, regardless of its reception. Anytime I converse about movies with friends and family, it often extends far beyond, because when I talk about film, I talk about film. Influential directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Denis Villeneuve, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Coralie Fargeat, and Sean Baker fuel my creativity, and I draw from their work for inspiration when creating my own short films in my current Honors Cinematography 5-6 class.

Moreover, I truly cannot envision myself in any career other than film. I want a job that excites me and makes getting out of bed exciting rather than a chore. While there may be days when I lack any sort of motivation, which is a natural part of being human, I believe that a fulfilling career in the film industry will enhance my enjoyment of life.

Another motivator for choosing this path is my desire to represent the Armenian community and culture, which has historically been underrepresented. I have noticed that more Armenians in the film industry have been getting recognized recently, and it inspires me to contribute to that progress. However, there is still a need for more representation, and I aim to be a source of hope and encouragement for fellow Armenians. I want to prove that success in this industry is achievable. Many of my Armenian friends hesitate to pursue film despite their passion, fearing its challenges. My goal is to break that myth and show them that if I can achieve my dreams, so can they. It might seem unattainable, but with dedication and hard work, you can accomplish anything, regardless of its size or influence. As Christopher Nolan has said, “The most important thing is that you never give up. Believe in yourself, know your story, and keep going."

With all of these motivations in mind, I am determined to succeed in the film industry and fulfill my ambitions of being a film director who also produces and writes his own films, who then later gets to open his production company, where he gets to honor unique independent films.
