Organize for the Future by Tara - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

With every New Year that comes around, many different New Year’s resolutions come as well. These resolutions vary greatly from person to person; some choose resolutions to save money, to eat healthier and work out more, to spend more time with family, and some people even have multiple resolutions. This year, I fashioned my own resolution to keep myself more organized. More organization in my life has already made me a better student in 2016.

One may wonder how being more organized can help make me a better student, but there are many wonderful habits that come with the territory. The first of these habits is keeping a planner and writing everything down. For years, I have seen my mother write down every due date, appointment, and reminder in her planner. She is one of the most organized people I know. When I made this resolution to become more organized, I thought the best thing I could do is watch those around me who are organized and contract similar behaviors. The first few days of having my planner, I felt like writing everything down was useless because I would remember the important dates. However, only two weeks into 2016, I can already tell the impact that using and checking my planner has made. I write down every appointment, deadline, due date, scholarship, and reminder as soon as I can and it has helped me tremendously. I get all of my work on done on time instead of scrambling at the last minute to turn it in, I never forget my scholarship deadlines, I don’t miss any appointments because I forgot about them, and I don’t forget where I am supposed to be and what I am supposed to be doing. This is so important to being a successful student in 2016, because by knowing everything I need to do and when I need to do it, makes me more efficient than ever.

Along with having a planner, being more organized has created the habit of making sure everything has a place and that everything is in its place. Every syllabus, assignment sheet, scholarship, transcript, and schedule are papers that are pertinent to any student. Without these documents, it makes it very difficult to be a successful student. Therefore, I knew I needed to get this aspect of my life organized. I did so by getting a three ring binder, page separators, and a folder. Every important piece of paper goes into the binder in its specific section. Whenever it is time for me to use a document, I remove it from the binder, place it into the folder, and take it with me where it needs to go. By doing this, I have stopped misplacing important documents. This allows me to be more successful in 2016 not only as a student, but also as being a reliable person. Being a student who is furthering my education means that one day, someone is going to be relying on me to have my stuff together for a job. Not keeping up with documents during school can very easily transfer to not keeping up with them in the work force. By developing this habit now, will not only make me a better student, but a better employee one day.

Simply doing these two things in 2016 have made me a better student, more reliable, and just made life easier. Being organized removes most of the chaos in my life. I say most because let’s face it, senior year is just crazy! However, as I am soon to be making the transition from a high school senior to a college freshman, I knew I had to begin being more organized, more responsible, and more dedicated to my work. College is coming fast, and I will be ready for it.
