Leading Yourself is Still Leading by Tanner - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Throughout our lives, some of us will be leaders and some will be followers; it’s just the nature of things. We will have group projects or be part of a committee where we will shine and step up to help. Other times, we will need to take a backseat and simply listen to and follow the guidance of our leaders. In college, we may not fill official leadership positions, but there’s no doubt that leadership skills are absolutely vital to have academic success.

Even if she isn’t leading anyone else, every college student is the leader of her own life; he is in charge of reaching his goals. Leaders use hard work, dedication, problem-solving skills, and proactive thinking to get groups to work together and projects to be completed on time. College students use these same skills on a more personal level to manage their homework load, balance social life with school, and keep on top of the many tasks they have to complete.
Leaders are leaders because they know how to take care of themselves and want to help take care of others. They are able to reach beyond their own needs and raise those around them to a higher standard of living. These skills become more applicable to college students because they are directly used in helping the individual reach his academic aspirations.

In conclusion, leadership skills are a vital component of any college student’s abilities, not because being a leader is pertinent to the college experience, but because those skills help the student get the most out of her education. Every student leads her own life, and for that simple reason, leadership skills are necessary for college success.
