Proactivity as a Means of Success by Tanner - December 2017 Scholarship Essay

Preparation, planning, time, and proactivity, especially proactivity, are vital to success on a school project. Proactivity encompasses the previously stated factors and is a meta-virtue that is often overlooked or taken for granted. To be proactive for a school project is to set a timeline for oneself and ensure that enough time is provided to prepare and plan out the message conveyed within the project. A successful school project provides the audience with the full picture; for example, if a school project is to be dedicated toward educating others on a specific bacterium, then time will need to be set aside for research, preparations made for how the research will be presented, and planning will be necessary for where key points will be distributed throughout the presentation. Another important factor to consider is communication.

Communication between the instructor who assigned the project is critical to a project’s success. Making sure to validate points and providing smooth transitions by communicating with the instructor throughout the project will greatly contribute to a strong presentation. Another important aspect of a school project to consider is the communication of information to the audience, who are you presenting to? Are they already knowledgeable on the topic, or are they completely new to the topic? If the first option is considered, then feel free to include any scientific jargon as necessary; however, if it is the latter to be considered, then avoid fancy word choices and improvise a method to convey the information in such a way that an audience is not dissuaded your from maintaining their focus on the project.

Proactivity is necessary for many aspects of life and a desire to create a successful school project is a great way to condition oneself to developing a proactive mind. Successful school projects can also be presented to outside parties and lead to more opportunities. Preparation, planning, time, communication, and proactivity; utilization of these factors is the ultimate strategy for developing a successful school project.
