The Influence of Ms. Ives by Tanja - July 2014 Scholarship Essay
I love to learn. As a college student I have had difficulty narrowing down my field of interest to just include classes in my major. I love science, history is fascinating, psychology intriguing, and anthropology is compelling. No matter what subject I am studying I always love the reading material. I can read almost any book on any subject. My love of reading has made me more studious and a well-rounded student.
My love of reading is due to my third grade teacher Ms. Ives. Ms. Ives encouraged us to read on our own as any good grade school teacher would. But my favorite part of everyday was the fifteen minutes after lunch when Ms. Ives would read to us out loud. Those fifteen minutes a day transported me to unimagined worlds. I learned reading was more than just fluency and vocabulary, but about being able live through another’s experiences. Learning was not just memorization but visualizing concepts and reproducing results. When I think back I can not only remember the books she read to us but the way they made me feel. I still have that same experience every time I pick up a book; I am transported by the ideas and passions of others. My own passions and interests continue to develop, expanding my abilities as a student and influencing my impact on the world.
