Values over Money by Tania - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
It's important to keep the same values as you had when a child, to dream big and envision oneself in a position one could only imagine. We tend to lose track of our desires and fall towards what will earn us the most money and often not joy. If I trust my instinct, it’ll lead me to my passion which hopefully, in the end, is my career. I crave a position that requires dedication; very sought out. Time is of virtue, yet I’m willing to sacrifice years if it leads me to prosperity and a stable career. I intend on becoming a detective, but there are steps before becoming one, which in the meantime I shall work towards achieving my first degree. First steps require age, which I can't speed up on my own and instead of waiting for time to pass by I need to stay focused. Slacking isn't an option, straight out of high school to transitioning to college a full-time student/worker, and when of age-depending if my passion shifts- I transfer to a university for law school or enroll as a police officer. Our ideology shifts as we further develop and become more socialized with the world, what we intend to do now may not be the same in a year or even a week.
I am a full-time student, my time is eaten up through not just school itself but a part-time job as well. If it isn't enough to have honors classes and on top manage enough hours for my paycheck and in the background keep a social life. I don't regret anything, this gives me insight into adulthood in terms of balancing a career and school, all preparation for what the real world awaits. The reality of it all is, every step I take now depicts what my future will hold. With my qualifications I could've entered a university, but why rush it? Why go head first into a major that decides your entire career, I need the advantage of the time to evaluate if my dream careers are my actual dreams.
Many say if I plan to be an officer than college is a waste of time, but what better option than to earn a degree if my desires change form then on out? I see it as an opportunity to work towards both routes than being bound to one. It's common for many individuals to change their path of major, in fact, it happens to 80% of students. It'd be a shame to realize that perhaps a police officer or lawyer doesn't align with my goals and to have to start from square one. Attending college before the leap of enrolling to an academy allows me the gap to honestly decide which route I should pursue. I plan to chase my dreams as if I were still a child but now with the mindset of an adult in how to achieve them.
