Simple But Great by Tamia - February 2015 Scholarship Essay

When preparing to graduate you might start forgetting some of the key people that helped you make it this far. They were there when you did not do so well on your SATs or perhaps you did not get the acceptance letter you wanted so badly. You are even quite possibly all packed and just waiting to make that trip across the stage because you are ready to be out of the house. Whatever head space you may find yourself in, you could always benefit from one last good read before graduating. The book I feel is worthy of such an honor is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.

For most this would not be the first book to come to mind because it is a children’s book, but I believe a whole new perspective can be found through reading it again at an older age. The tree can be seen as the people that are helping get you into college so that you can do what you want. It is also be a good reminder to be aware of the people that help you to succeed. You may not realize it but someone cares a lot about the future you see for yourself, and would do anything to make sure you can get there. I feel this book is a reminder to be grateful to those people. Be a better person than the boy was to the tree. One day you could be in the same position, giving your everything for a loved one, so be mindful.
