The Future by Talisha - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

Hello, my name is Talisha Williams I am currently a senior at Hermitage High School. I have been accepted and enrolled at North Carolina Central University where I will be attending all four years. I plan to major in Criminal Justice because all of my life my passion and dream were to become a Defense Attorney. I always wanted to fight for what's right, and I also believe that people have reasons for why they do or say certain things you never know what people go through. Sometimes right is right and wrong is wrong because I believe in fairness, I believe in accountability for your actions if you have done something out of order, but you should also speak up for yourself if you know you didn't commit a crime that others say you did. So as a little girl, I've always wanted to help those families who have watched their loved ones go away for many years for a crime they didn't commit.
Speaking from experience on April 3, 2023, I sat in the courtroom and listened to the judge give my thirty-year-old brother 50 years in prison and 10 years of probation. Also, prior to that, my brother was already in jail for 5 years because they didn't find any evidence that he did it, so when crunch time came they came up with some conclusions to find him guilty. For me, the Criminal Justice system is important since it can determine life or death for many individuals. As a Defense Attorney, I want to make sure that I help those families and suspects get another chance at life.
