Ms. Thomas by Talia - January 2025 Scholarship Essay

In eighth grade, I had my first-ever African American core teacher, Ms. Thomas. She was my English teacher, and her passion and dedication for teaching and supporting her students was truly inspiring. I recall reading multiple books about African American history and struggles, which opened my eyes to my heritage and the broader context of our history.

Some parents were infuriated by Ms. Thomas’s choice of books, but Ms. Thomas stood firm in her curriculum choices, ensuring that all students–especially students like me–were educated about our history and could connect with our cultural roots. Why should I be blinded to my history? These books brought my perspective of life to a whole new level.

Because of Ms. Thomas, I became interested in learning more about African American literature and history and enrolled in the African American Literature course offered at my high school. Coming in as a freshman at a predominantly White school, I walked into the African American Literature course feeling a sense of empowerment because I was in a classroom surrounded by students who looked more like me. This course deepened my understanding of systemic issues and cultural experiences of African Americans.

These formative courses and experiences have fueled my interest in exploring African American Studies. I am excited to delve deeper into this field, not only to learn more about my own culture but also to contribute to a more inclusive and informed society.
