What attending college means to me. by tajessica - June 2013 Scholarship Essay

To me attending college is a chance at a better life for my family and myself. I would be the first of my family to further my education, not just because I am the oldest either. My mother and father were young when they had me, my mother was fifteen and father was seventeen. Neither one did not finish high school, and my younger sister did not even pass the seventh grade, As of today she has a two year old, I also have a even younger sister who is eleven. I pray and hope this poverty circle does not continue on to them and their children. I was raised by my great aunt who adopted me and my younger sister.  My adopted mother, who is now eighty-three, would love nothing better than to see her children further their education. I have lived in poverty all my life and quite frankly I am tired of living like this. I do not want to be rich let me get that straight I am not looking to be one of the "rich and famous". I am fighting to live in comfort,  I dream of living a life without disconnect notices late payment fees and bad credit. I live in urban neighborhood that I do not like living in where the first and third of every month is a party. Where you can get liquor and beer on every corner, but the nearest college is miles away. Its really sad but I am not looking for pity, I am looking for help. This is what attending college means to me, a chance at a better life for my family and myself.
