The College Degree Impact by Taitelynn - October 2024 Scholarship Essay

Books clatter on the desks, students pull out chairs to sit and listen to long lectures and learn about different topics. They spend long hours with textbooks, and homework. Aside from the time spent doing class work, and all the hard work that goes into it, college students spend time in their dorms, out with friends, working at their jobs, grocery shopping, and overall making a life for themselves. You may be wondering “What is so good about getting a college degree anyway?” There are so many benefits of having a college degree including more job opportunities along with higher earning potential, job satisfaction and personal growth. Having a college degree can be impactful on your life and it is useful for everyone’s futures. In the long run, it helps to have it in so many different ways.
A college degree gives you the opportunity of more careers. There are a few careers that require you to have a college degree. These are the careers that help to change people’s lives. They are also some of the more well paying jobs. Like doctors, phycologists, or really anything in the medical field. There are also job opportunities with human resources, any form of education, anything in the marketing and business fields, there are also engineers, and computer programmers that you have the opportunity to be, as well as many others. A college degree stands out on resumes, because of the effort you put into earning that and the knowledge that you have gained. More employers will want you to work for them even if they do not require you to have a college degree. From the college degree there is a higher chance of gaining more money to live your life. As I mentioned before, most of the required careers are the more well paying jobs. You also have the opportunity of career advancement. Most employers will want to promote someone with more experience, or who has a college degree rather than those who don’t.
With a college degree, you are more likely to be satisfied with the career path you choose. Going to college gives you the chance to go into your intended major. You may try out that major and decide it’s not for you. There is an opportunity for you to try out something else that you may like better. You can explore and try different things for just a few years rather than multiple years doing something you don’t enjoy until you find something you are good at and enjoy. College is just a few years of your life, by trying out different opportunities during college, and trying out what you love to do as well as learning about it, you don’t have to spend as much time on it. Whereas if you jump straight from high school to a career and not going to college, then you may not end up liking that career in the long run. It could be something you simply don’t enjoy doing, something you don’t understand, or really anything else. But there is also the problem of wanting to change out that career to something different. If you don’t enjoy that next one then you might want to change it as well. Or you would be spending the rest of your time until you retire doing something you don’t like. This would be a lot longer of a time. It would be more enjoyable to spend less of your time searching, and more of your time doing what you love.
A college degree helps you to gain more skills, and develop more as a person. Going to college gives you the opportunity of independence. Some people are away from home, they are going to get their own groceries, they are finding jobs to make a living, and they are learning how to manage their time. They are also learning budgeting. Those who are living at home have to do almost all that those living away from home have to do. You learn more about being in the “real world” and what you need to do to make a living. Going to college expands your knowledge and gives you the ability to think critically. In college, there are some classes that want you to do things as partners, or groups. This allows you to learn how to work as a team, and helps you to work better with others. Being with your professor, and with many other students, you may want to ask questions and may need help understanding a topic. This helps you to gain more communication skills and to learn more on seeking help when you need it. These are just a few skills you can gain and improve from going to college and getting a college degree.
Overall attending college and getting a college degree will impact you in the long run. It will give you a higher earning potential as well as more job opportunities, you gain more job satisfaction, and will grow more as a person. It is worth it to spend just a few more years of your time in a classroom learning, and earning a college degree than not.
