College Preparation by Tagin - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

College is a huge and intimidating step in any graduating high schooler’s life. Being thrown into an unknown and unfamiliar world with no preparation can be terrifying. That is why if I had the opportunity to create a high school extracurricular activity, it would be a college preparation class; that way, students would know how to find and apply for scholarships, know how to stay financially stable, and know how to keep an organized schedule to accommodate to the busy life of a college student. The class would be open to high school seniors, and would be mandatory to take.
The first step begins with finding and applying for scholarships. Finding scholarships that you qualify for can be tricky. The instructor of the class would help the student find specific scholarships that fits his or her needs and talents. After finding the right scholarships, the student would then learn how to apply for it. While applying for scholarships would primarily be directed to the seniors, younger classmen could still fill them out for a mock application. By doing so, younger classmen will then know what it will be like when the time comes to actually fill out a scholarship application.
For the second step, the students would create a budget for them to remain financially stable. The students would learn how to create a budgeting plan and learn how to stick to it. Paying rent, tuition, student loans, credit card bills, and other necessities can become overwhelming if one does not know how to handle it correctly. This course will teach students to become responsible and independent with their finances even out of the college atmosphere.
For the third step, the students how to keep an organized schedule. Balancing a job, classes, and personal time is no easy matter, especially if one does not know how to manage his or her time correctly. By learning to keep an organized schedule, the student will learn to correctly and efficiently keep their schedules stress free and orderly. This will also help the students in the future when it comes to balancing life outside of college.
In conclusion, having a college preparation course would be what I would create as a high school class if I had the opportunity. It would benefit the students for college life and in some aspects, life beyond college. By teaching students how to find and apply for scholarships, how to stay financially stable, and how to keep an organized schedule, we set students up for a successful future.
