25 Years from Now... by Symone - September 2018 Scholarship Essay
25 years is a long time to figure out what I plan to grow up to be. Let alone find ways to continue learning. But one thing that I have learned in this very short time that I have been on this earth is that you are constantly learning every day. Every day we are faced with new challenges that we must overcome in one way or another. Our minds are constantly being shaped for the better when it comes to growing up. In order to become an adult we must learn how to act like one, and all of the new responsibilities that come with adulthood. In 25 years I plan to have either chosen the career path of a gerontologist, psychologist, or early childhood teacher. Each one of these areas of studies is going to push me to learn something new about the field every day.
In a classroom full of 3rd graders it is necessary to keep up with their constantly growing and changing minds. It makes teaching that much more fun when the teacher is not only invested in the class, but also make the learning environment more fun. So learning new techniques on how to keep the children engaged in the lesson plan while still learning would be a fun task that I would be able to accomplish. I learn best when I am put into very hands-on activities that require creativity along with research. Being a teacher not only for the younger elementary would be a challenge, but so would the other age groups. Middle school students are constantly going through changes not only physically, but also socially. High school students are in the transition from child to young adult, which is very challenging to navigate with all of the pressures that come along with it.
Psychology has a vast area of careers to choose from which all require research and a consistent knowledge of new technology and how society is changing with the times. Technology is a part of our everyday lives and is getting smarter every year. It is important that we have people studying these changes in society and making notes of the more hazardous changes. Gerontology is not very well known when brought up in your typical conversation, but that is the exact reason why we need more people studying these processes and just exactly how the mind is aging. All of these career choices would keep me on my toes every day with trying to find new discoveries in improving my research, and understanding how the society today is shaping and changing the future generations.
