Science: Our Guide to The Universe by Sylvia - April 2013 Scholarship Essay

Why is the sky blue? Why are we not falling off into space? Why are thousands of people killed by minuscule size things every day? Questions like these are what intrigued me into learning science. Placed in a world with unexplainable occurrences, science helps us put the puzzle pieces of life together. One person's curiosity can lead to the improvement of life for people around the globe. It is the idea of knowing there must be a solution and seeking that solution that attracts me into the subject that is science.   Recently, I attended the University of Florida Science Training Program. The whole experience was very ironic. I walked on campus wondering why I was here when I knew nothing about science. Seven weeks of scientific research later, I found my passion. “I love science.” That's what ran through my head each day, for the remaining weeks. I loved mixing chemicals in the lab and identifying the underlying meaning of the results. The lab felt like a playground for my creativity and knowledge to run free. I was even more excited to present my experiment. To tell others what I just discovered and the possibilities it could mean… it was all so thrilling and fulfilling. Subsequently being in the summer program has opened my eyes to a whole new world of pure passion for science. I enjoy being in the science field, because after all science is an aspect that I adore.
