There is no one way to Learn by Sydney - September 2024 Scholarship Essay
Learning can be defined as our brain processing and storing information and experiences that are then used in later situations and can even alter a person’s behavior. For example, we all learned how to walk at a young age, otherwise we would just crawl everywhere. Walking is now inherent to being human, although it is not an ability we are born with, our behavior has changed because of something we learned. As previously mentioned, learning doesn’t just occur in the classroom, we are constantly observing and receiving information from everything around us. Different sets of knowledge require different learning styles because of how much there is to learn, and how different it all is from each other.
When I want to learn something for school, I prefer to use a method of teaching the subject myself. I gather stuffed animals and arrange them in front of me like a class, then I try to ‘teach’ them the problem or subject I am struggling to learn myself. This way I am forced to break down the problem in bite sized chunks in order to help my audience understand better. Therefore, I myself am absorbing the information in a simpler, easier to understand way.
Outside of school, I find there is no one perfect way to learn life skills. When I started learning to cook, I found that trial and error worked best. My first recipe tasted horrible, but as I kept trying over and over again, identifying where I messed up and fixing it, my cooking started tasting better. Right now, I am learning how to knit, and I have found that the best way to learn how to knit is to just jump right into a project. As I work my way through a project, I can identify exactly where I need help and improvement, and the next time around, I will have learned from those mistakes and have the knowledge to improve.
Overall, learning is a broad term, it can look different across a wide variety of subjects. Whether you are learning to play an instrument or how to write a good essay, there are lots of learning methods and opportunities waiting to be explored.
