Positive Impacts from a Moral Compass by Sydney - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
People often call me a “moral compass” because I am a person who deeply resonates with things like passion, empathy, and morality. It is plausible that I use these traits towards a career in human services. Thus, my personality and background have influenced my decision to study social work, which will gear me toward a life altering career.
Passion is a dominant character trait of mine. Hence, it has inspired my career path. Next fall, I am going to attend a four-year university to study social work, a field I am very passionate about. I hope to become a child and family social worker with this degree. Social work is a captivating career that I feel interests me because of my genuine desire to help those who are underprivileged. To put it bluntly, child and family social workers have a very tough job. They work towards maximizing the well-being of others. More specifically, the welfare of children. In the future I will be arranging adoptions, finding homes for abused children, and providing overall assistance to families. I aspire to relieve people’s suffering and fight for social justice. Advocating for what I believe in and promoting safety and morality is a big area of life that I will engage in.
Coming from a family of eight, empathy and resolution are things that have always come easily to me. Through all the chaos that large families bring, I always played the role of the peacemaker. Whether it was settling a debate over who got the last Cosmic Brownie or being a shoulder to cry on when things got tough, I made sure my family knew I was always there for them. I am going to implement this kind of behavior in my career as a social worker.
The world needs people who are willing to make sacrifices for the betterment of our society, and I intend to partake. Most people steer clear of social work because, fairly enough, it is a high-stress subject and job. And believe me, I know how stressful life can already be. Juggling high school, two practices a day, work, and other club involvement has given me insight into how busy life can get. However, I am willing to deal with that burden of stress if it means I can create a safe environment for others.
I will impact those in need by providing them with the right psychological help. Like all social service jobs, psychology and social work go hand in hand. You have to be able to tune into a person's behaviors and aim to provide them with guidance. Lucky for me, psychology is a field that engages my interest. In high school alone, I have taken three psychology classes.
All in all, the world will become a better place if people have the right resources to thrive. Social work is a job that impacts people’s lives for the better. Child and family social workers are especially qualified in the realm of advocacy and morality, which are crucial factors of a flourishing society.
