What are you going to study? These are some of the most dreaded words for me and those who are in a similar position to hear. Each one of these conservation ends with me having to explain how I’m not completely sure what I want to do with the rest of my life followed by an obligatory And that’s okay! On every application I click on the box that says major and begin the scroll to the bottom of the list to select the option that reads “Undecided”. While to some it may seem like I have no aim nor direction for life as I still am uncertain about what kind of career I will pursue after college, this could not be further from the truth.
High school seniors are expected to have it all figured out before making the move into. college. On average, seventy-five percent of United States college students change their major at least one before they graduate. Most eighteen year olds do not know what they want to do with the rest of their lives, resulting in this high number of major changes and for many dissatisfaction with the degree they obtain.
As of now I plan to attend Taylor University beginning in the fall and while I do not know at the moment with what major I will graduate, I will begin school as a “Pre-Major”. This means that I will be able to start taking classes that will keep me on track to graduate within four years while simultaneously exploring a variety of disciplines that interest me as I carefully consider career opportunities and which major would be the best fit for my future. There are many programs at Taylor that interest me such as communication, sustainable development, Christian ministries, and their unique orphans and vulnerable children major. However, beginning college as a Pre-Major will allow me to learn more about these topics without limiting my opportunities before narrowing down and commiting to a major.
