How NCNW Changed My Perspective on College by Sydney - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
December 2017 I was inducted into the National Council Of Negro Women also known as NCNW. NCNW is a non-profit community service organization founded in 1935 with the mission to advance the opportunities and the quality of life for African American women, their families, and communities. An organization I never knew would change my life and shape the trajectory of my future. Since my freshman year of college, I've always been nervous, being homeschooled for all of my high school years I had little to no social skills. All of my freshman and sophomore years of college, I stayed to myself. It wasn't until my junior year of college did I start opening up to my peers, I had no other choice being that my major was Communication (haha). I befriended a girl named Ashlee who happened to be the Parliamentarian of NCNW for that year. As we grew closer, she would introduce me to her organization, and inform me of events to which I politely declined. This went on for weeks until one day, I just said: "yes Ash, I'll come". From that day forward, I attended more events and when new member applications opened up, I applied and was accepted. I was ecstatic! During my first semester of NCNW, I was awarded N-Sister of the Month in October for showing exemplary character. As months went on I was inducted the following December and awarded the Mary Mcleod Bethune award for accumulating the most community service hours. The organization took me out of my comfort zone, allowed for me to meet some friends who I now call sisters, as well as presented me with an opportunity in my senior year of college as Chaplin. To which, I politely and excitedly accepted! As a result of NCNW, I am now committed to not only unifying my community but following my passions and building a stronger community through service and self-reliance!
