My Dream Job by Sydney - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

I feel as though I have been asked what I want to be when I "grow up" for my entire life, and I have never had a definite answer. I was never one of those children who always knew what they wanted to be, and honestly, this is still a difficult question for me to answer, because I am not quite sure what I would like to pursue in the future. However, once I graduate from college, I would like to get a job that I feel will be both financially stable and rewarding. I hope that whatever I decide to pursue, that I will be helping myself as well as others, possibly through technology, as that is one of my current interests. Technology, design and social media are all passions of mine, which is why I have chosen the path of a communications major because I feel as if that is a very versatile degree. I plan to attend The University of Tampa in the fall, and I believe that their strong communications program will help me succeed for the next four years. I will also be a part of their Honors Program, which will help build my work ethic and professionalism. Even if I do not choose to pursue a field in technology, a communications degree still allows for many other job opportunities, such as film, media and journalism. However, I think that technology is a constantly changing and growing field that will allow for several opportunities, so I hope to stay on that path.

One of my major influences has been my dad, who works at ESPN in the IT department. Last year, he brought me to work one day over the summer and I had the opportunity to interview employees in many different fields and ask them about their jobs and what sort of tasks they did on a daily basis. One woman that I met with was a user experience designer, and her job really sparked my interest because it tied psychology, design, and technology all into one job. My dad has always been really good at discussing careers and my professional future with me, and he encouraged me to follow along a path where I can be doing what I love while simultaneously being what I deem successful. Overall, I definitely could see a successful career and future in technology. As long as I end up doing what I love, and fulfilling any goals that I wish to pursue once I graduate college, I believe that I will be happy and satisfied both professionally and within my community.
