Early Bird gets the Worm by Sydney - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
I’ve always been a morning person. From a young age, I would wake up with the sun, starting my day as early as 7:00. Now that I am in college, this time is a little later, but I still find myself the most productive in the morning.
There’s nothing that feels more rewarding than waking up and seeing that you have the entire day ahead of you. I know in the very few instances when I have woken up around 10:00 (which is considered early for many) I feel like my day is wasted. To me, waking up early allows me to get a head start on my day and do things that I need to do so I can also do things that I want to do.
For example, there are many exciting (and free) events throughout the weekends at my university. In order to make time to try new things and go to different events, I have to be able to balance my time with homework assignments and studying. Being the morning person that I am, I have developed this mindset over the years, so I am able to implement this easily. Because of this, I am able to get things done in the mornings without complaining. This has also allowed me to make many new memories with new friends, as I have been able to attend football games, participate in a color run, donate to charity (and eat Pancakes) at Pancakes for Parkinson’s (a popular event at UVA), and attend many other events (with free food, of course!).
All in all, maybe it’s easier for me to wake up and get things done because that’s what I’ve grown up doing, I am used to it. Yet, there’s something nice about being able to wake up knowing that it’s not lunch time. Waking up in the morning is not stressful; it does not make you feel like you are on a time crunch to get things done. It’s actually quite peaceful knowing that the hustle and bustle of the day has not yet begun. Having more time to get things done allows for the best, most complete outcome in everything you do. Overall, waking up earlier is not the happiest vision for some, but I can’t help but smile at the full day ahead of me.
