One Word To Describe Why I Wish to go to College? by Sydney - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Heuristic. With a definition of: involving or serving as an aid to learning, discovery, or problem-solving by experimental and especially trial-and-error methods, I believe it is a perfect word to describe why I would like to attend college this coming fall. Growing up, my parents were the first of their generation to complete all four years of college and have always preached to me about the challenges they faced. However, I grew up and am growing up in a different generation where everyone is smart and everyone's itching for a spot to attend the top colleges and/or universities. With this being said, I see college as an opportunity to create my own experience full of trial and error that I can share with my future kids and loved ones. College is independence, college is competition, college is one of the most defining moments of my young life and is where I will have experiences that will shape me into an adult. The experiences are what I will use to learn and improve academically, socially, and mentally so that when I am thrown out into the real world I have some knowledge of what and what not to do.
College is known to be an experience whose memories last a lifetime. As I look at the colleges I have applied to, the amount of out- of state colleges outweighs the in-state colleges. I believe that by invoking upon the journey of attending an out-of-state school one gains mental growth and independence, has exposure to cultural diversity and most importantly must be able to adapt to the new and unfamiliar collegiate atmosphere. One of the most important things acquired by attending college away from home is obtaining a sense of self and true independence. College is an experience of personal reflection and growth. The word I chose is how I would describe my method of going about my college experience. My heuristic method will be experiences full of trial and error eventually leading to improvement in my overall character. The mistakes I make will not be seen in my eyes as something to be ashamed of, but something to embrace and better myself from.
