I Owe it to Orchestra by Sydney - September 2017 Scholarship Essay

If it hadn't had been for my orchestra classes all throughout middle school and high school, I don’t think I would be the same person that I am today. I’ve had many orchestra directors and teachers and each one of them have taught me something in which I can carry with me forever and even into the work field in the future. For example, help others when they need it, playing out (being confident), and taking advantage of opportunities that are given to you.

If there is someone in my section that has a question about a passage or a question about a note, I can be there. In an orchestra, you aren’t supposed to hold anything back. Playing out is always best and being confident. My teachers would always say, “If you don’t play out, how can we catch mistakes?” Lastly, when opportunities such as trying out for District Orchestra are presented you, jump at them! I’m very happy that I took the chance, auditioned, and got in! All of this can transfer later down in the line for me with school or anything I want to do, and it doesn't have to only deal with music.

I have also been able to do things such as go to concert festival, host Concert Festival, and be a part of the District Orchestra. There’s something about playing all different types of music with others who are just as passionate or feel the same way you do. At the end of the day, I owe it all to orchestra.
