Earth Science Professor by Sydney - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
Earth science has always been a topic of interest for me. I first learned of this wonderful science when I was in the 8th grade and I fell in love with it immediately. Geology and Atmospheric science, specifically, have always been my favorite of the many branches of Earth Science. Astrology is another Science I’ve always thought about learning and I love the idea of knowing all about the universe. If I were to teach a class as a professor, it would have to be a class about Earth science, most likely Geohazards, Meteorology or Geology, or one of Astronomy.
Geohazards are the most interesting forces of nature to study. Volcanoes, Tornadoes, Tsunamis, and Hurricanes, are all so fascinating to learn and teach about. Meteorology is also an incredible branch to be able to teach. Along with loving the science itself, these classes would be fun to teach. Making a tornado or cloud in a bottle or even watching a live video of a geohazard occur could all be a way to teach the fundamentals of the science. Geology is another class I would be interested in teaching. The different types of rocks and how they form are so exciting to learn about. When I got to highschool, we were required to take a more advanced earth science sophomore year. During this class we did a lab on geology and rocks. This was one of my favorite labs as we learned how to identify a rock based on its both its physical and chemical properties. If I taught a Geology class as a professor, I would be able to recreate and advance this lab. Possibly, I would be able to take the class on a field trip to collect rock samples and then identify them. Although being a professor isn't my first occupation choice, teaching a class in a field of Earth Science would be fun. This is an important topic to understand, especially as we advance our technology it is imperative to know what gases and liquids effect different rocks and climates.
Along with Earth Science, Astrology is another amazing science I would consider teaching. Though I've never taken an Astrology or planetary class, the idea of it interests me greatly. I love the idea of learning about other planets and the universe as a whole. One day, It would be amazing to be able to identify planets and stars outside of the Milky Way. Often I imagine being able to visit and explore these distant planets and finding extraordinary materials from them. Being able to teach a class about these other planets and our planets would be amazing. Teaching others about the stars and how they form and die or about how moons are different than planets and which planets have several suns is incredible to even think about. Astrology is an amazing science, packed with information so fascinating it's almost impossible to believe. Teaching an Astrology class as a trained professor would be phenomenal. In fact, just knowing enough about astrology to become a professor would be a dream come true.
Teaching a college class about a science connected to the earth or the universe would be amazing. Having all the knowledge to be able to do so would in itself be, to me, the most amazing thing ever. My dream occupation, although having to do with earth science, is undecided as of right now. However if I was a professor and had to teach a class it would, without a doubt, be one of either earth science or astrology.
