Creating My Business by Sydney - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

I took an entrepreneurship class in 10th grade and one of our main projects was to create a business. I had a difficult time thinking of an idea that was realistic and made sense, but one day, a light bulb came on. I thought, "What am I good at? What are my hobbies? How can I incorporate this into a business?" I thought of Syd's Violin. Syd's Violin is my wedding music company where I play at weddings for a fair, decent price. In class I created a business plan, pamphlets, and business cards too.

From then, we presented our business plans in front of the class and the teacher chose three people who would have the opportunity to present to business people in the Lowcountry. I was one of those three people! I started to think to myself, "This could really work!"

When it came time to present to the for the in-class competition, they listened to my business plan, took notes, told you what they liked, and how you could improve your business idea. Then they chose their two favorite business plans to present at the Yes Carolina! Competition and I was chosen yet again! They also ranked us and I came in first place and received $250.00!

The next step was to present at the Yes Carolina! Competition where I was competing against 50 kids from all over the Lowcountry. I was super nervous but remembered that whatever happened, have fun and use it as a learning experience. I got through the first and second round but not the finals. At the end of the day I walked away with $350.00 and useful information to help better my company.

As of today, I haven't done anything with Syd's Violin. However, with the in-class competition and the Yes Carolina! Competition, I am well informed and have many ideas to help improve Syd's Violin. I never would have imagined a little thought or idea would have gotten me to the point where I was presenting my plan and getting paid for it! I will always be thankful for the opportunity.
