From Sea to Lab by Syaira - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
Seaworld was a dream come true I was going to work with Killer Whales. Shamu was my dream and being his trainer was going to be my dream job that meant I was going to be work with all different sea life. Marine Biology is what it's called and as a little kid it was cool who wouldn't want to be that person that go to be with dolphins and stingrays all day everyday. How about that walrus that slapped the pirate right off the deck into the water and laughed at him. As the years went by why did chemicals become a part what I liked? There is an inner branch growing every child from the day they say I want to be that person to the day they make the decision of I am going into the field of this.
All through a Elementary I was set on marine biology. with my dad being a teacher he got passes to Seaworld so we would go often and we would go se every show and have to see every animal possible. My love of marine life did not stop. My dad waited to get scuba certified until I could. When I turned ten we went to PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and they put me into a pool and did an evaluation on if I am capable to be certified. The following months I went through long nights with my dad studying and training for this test and became certified with him so we both could go diving and experience what our ocean is about.
Not to long after my family decided to move. A complete change in my life which switched everything around. We no longer lived close to any dive locations where it would be easy for me and my dad to go diving and I needed to find something new to do. On top of that, it was the start to my middle school year. New place with no friends and I had no idea what I was going into. I soon in the following years got connected to horses and became interested in what I could offer to them. I started to ride regularly and help at the barn as often as I could to keep myself busy. To this day I still am involved with horses and now teach kids how to ride at camp. I take skills I learned and I help kids grow but, it doesn't stop there.
From the transition from middle school to high school I became ahead of my class I took all honor courses and was a year ahead. I also knew I needed to get a job since I was going to be getting a car soon. With horse back riding and now being in High school Volunteering at my local middle school I decided to tutor. I took a heavy course load of all science classes and learned that chemistry may be hard but was more interesting and enjoyable then other sciences to me. Once tutoring started I found that helping kids in math and basic chemistry and 8th grade science was super easy for me, biology was a struggle, and as much as I loved marine life it was not as interesting as making calculations measuring out the chemicals needed and mixing them to make the solution.
Throughout my life I was always bound to be in a science field of study no doubt if it was teaching science at one point to being in marine biology, veterinarian, or chemist. One thing is for sure is that no matter what I was going to help out my community with what I am going to do so I can make our planet better, our community better, our lives better, our state better, our health better, and our education better.
