Psychological End Point by Stephanie - August 2022 Scholarship Essay

Psychology has been one of my strongest passions. I accidentally stumbled upon this lens when I was deciding on which AP class to take. I had always had a liking to anything that has to do with the human body and I am utterly fascinated at what the mind can do so, I decided to sign up for the class with less than a week left for the start of the school year. I have always had a good pace with all my academics, whether I was fond of the subject or not. I dive deep into my work and take pride in what I can do, as well as how I deal with the things I feel I can not do. My academic desire for this upcoming year is to continue this drive as well as to dive deeper into social psychology to better understand the people around me and how this knowledge can assist me with helping others, overcome their situations.
I am a seventeen year old rising senior and I have a whole life ahead of me to think about. My dream is to become a psychiatrist that specializes in children and adolescents. More so, I want to remove the stigma that is placed on not only on women of color, but as well as the Latino youth, and plenty of other POC youth. Many POC can describe that they have felt trapped by their emotions and seek help. However, some parents refuse to obtain that help since they (the parents) have noticeably been through worse and there was no "need" for psychological help. I believe that because it was not available to them at the time does not mean it wasn't needed. That is another aspect of how society views psychology that I would like to remove. I can not do this solely on my own but, changes have to start somewhere.
It is because of these goals I wish to meet and the characteristics I wish to change, is why my utmost important academic goal of this school year to complete as well as pass my social psychology dual enrollment course at my local university is so dear for the start of my psychiatry journey.
It might seem as a small step to be so engrossed with, however, every change, start, end, and pathway, starts with a smaller step in order to be able to move onto the next.
