Trying New Things by Stasia - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
If I got to pick a senior yearbook quote, it would be “try something new every day that scares you.” I did not go to a regular brick and mortar school for my senior year and therefore, did not have a yearbook. I graduated six years ago and over that time I have had so many different new and exciting experiences that I wish I had taken when I was in high school. I have had the pleasure of taking care of people in a hospital, which makes me wish I would have taken the time to volunteer more times at the local nursing homes. During my time at the hospital I became CPR certified and that has been very useful throughout my life, which is something I wish I had pursued earlier in my life. I started an assistant coaching position at the local high school for girls lacrosse, which makes me wish I had continued to play sports throughout my high school career. Most importantly, I am becoming a mom this year and it has made me look at what I want for my child and his future growing up. I have realized that I want him to try any and every opportunity he can, because it will only help him grow and learn new things.
Every opportunity in life can be scary at first, the not knowing of how it will go or how things will turn out but, at the end of the day whether you had a great time or a horrible time, at least it was something you went out on a limb and tried. In high school, even though you are young, there are still so many opportunities out there to learn new things and volunteer to help others. Take the time to get to know the options in your area.
