Encourage Education by Stacy - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
Don't tell kids, they need to do good in school. They need to get into college, so they can get a good job. It needs to be explained in language they can understand and relate to.
When I was in high school, I didn’t understand the importance of a degree. I did take advanced placement classes and dual enrollment. That’s just what I was told I had to do, and everyone else was doing it. It used to be that a bachelor’s degree was enough to keep you competitive in the workplace. It shows that you have a higher degree of learning and are well- rounded. I wish I knew then, what I know now! Even when I went to college, I didn’t fully apply myself. I see now though, that the harder you work, the more it pays off.
Having a degree means, I will always have something to fall back on. If I decide that my current career is not working out, or I find another field that I enjoy; I have the opportunity to change paths. I plan to continue my education for as long as I can. I want to be the best I can be. I want to be an expert in my field. I am already in a male dominated industry, having a degree gives me the tools I need to succeed.
It has been over 10 years since I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Sociology. The older I get the more I see what my peers have accomplished. It has not been required yet in my career that I have a Master’s degree; however I want it, so that it doesn’t keep me from progressing in my career or future. I do not want to lose out on an opportunity because I am under- educated. I do know that as long as I continue to succeed in my position now, I will have the opportunity to move up the corporate ladder, and a Master’s degree will be required. Even in my position now, it requires a bachelor’s degree. It’s a credential that many people still don’t have, and it really does separate the candidates.
This degree will be challenging, yet rewarding. No matter what happens to me in my life, my education is something that no one will ever be able to take from me. I plan to progress constantly throughout my career. With already having experience and expertise in logistics and purchasing, over the next two years I will get a solid foundation in distribution. My next step, through hard work and dedication is to be recognized and promoted to my supervisor’s position, Assistant PDC Manager. A master’s degree is a requirement for progression. The next steps are PDC Manager, and General Global PDC Manager. With logistics, purchasing and distribution experience along with my master’s degree and concentration in Supply Chain Managements, my options and opportunities will be endless.
A college degree is a tool to push you forward and help you to succeed. I have used my knowledge not only for my career, but to get through tough situations in life itself. I am able to think more clearly, logically, use deductive logic and strategies I have learned and applied them to situations to resolve issues.
