My Love for Calculus by Spencer - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
I am definitely more of a math and science kind of person. I have always found numbers extremely interesting. Math is an important subject that everyone needs to know because most occupations use math in some way every day. Teaching any kind of math would be fun, but if I have to pick just one academic subject then it would have to be Calculus. I want to teach Calculus not only because I am logically minded, but also because I have a great Calculus teacher, Mr. Gonyea, who makes learning Calculus fun and easy.
Mr. Gonyea is a great teacher and someone I really admire. He is always full of energy and excited to teach us about the subject he loves. I always look forward going to his class. When someone shares their passion for a subject, it is often contagious. When Mr. Gonyea teaches the subject he loves, I cannot help but love it myself. He is such a great teacher that it makes me want to follow in his footsteps and teach Calculus. It really is amazing how one teacher can make such a great difference in their students' lives.
Since I am very logically minded, Calculus is even more enjoyable. Math comes really easy for me. Because of this, it is easier for me to explain math to other people. I want to help everyone acquire the love for math that I have. We in America are behind the rest of the world in math and science. Can you imagine what it would be like if people like me could create a passion for math in our students? If we can just get our students excited about math, we could become the math powerhouse of the world.
In conclusion, if I become a teacher, I want to teach Calculus because Mr. Gonyea taught me how to love Calculus and how to apply Calculus to everyday life. Calculus can be used in physics, engineering, economics, statistics and medicine. His passion for Calculus is helping me to share my passion for Calculus with others.
