College: My Personal Development Beyond My Career Choice by Sparkle - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
There are several forms of development that one can endure; from mental, physical, and spiritual development, all of which I hope to achieve in college. Development is described as a state of growth, advancement, or maturation. This state encourages self-investment, hard work, and positive consistency such as grades. My main reason for wanting to attend college is to encounter a new environment that will benefit me in ways beyond my career choice. College should be a well-rounded experience that assures and assist in one’s improvement whether that be education-wise, individualism, or socially. For as long as I could remember college has always been an interest of mine for numerous reasons like furthering my education, interacting with new people, strengthen my independency, improve as an individual, and the overall college experience. College seems to be a place where one discovers themselves on a larger scale and differentiates priorities from irrelevant things. For instance, choosing to complete an assignment rather than attending a huge frat party, this could be difficult, but it will develop responsibility and dedication to school. Furthermore, it promotes evaluation of self and even others because one would learn to adapt to positive reinforcements. Not to forget, the since of community that I could gain, which is developing trust. I chose the word development because not only am I currently striving to improve my well-being, but I truly believe that college will be a perfect place to do so because I will be in a new environment with infinite opportunities. Also, because it is a word that can expand and illustrate growth of any kind and it can intertwine with good and bad experiences. In comparison, it will improve my social life immensely and vitalize me physically and mentally. “Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy, and sustainable human development.” This quote by Kofi Annan indicates that education has the potential to alter and effectively improve one’s quality of life due to change and development. I agree that education, especially college stems from betterment in various ways. As a student, I could develop leadership skills, communication skills, and personal interest. Personally, I assume my college experience will prepare me with expectations about the world and future. Also, it will give me a new perspective on myself and life because I hope to get more out of it than an education. For example, memories and experiences that will remind me of where I started, where I am, and where I am going. Lastly, my overall improvement as a student, citizen, and person. Improvement of any kind has shown to develop people into influential roles in society, while college is not necessarily the answer or experience that encourages vital characteristics in a person, I believe that is the case for me. College will be an investment that stimulates my mind, body, and soul because it will challenge me to excel beyond limitations I impose on myself. To sum it up, development is continuous state or phase in one’s life that improves their lives and others around them.
