Embracing adaptability and growth. by Souleika - July 2024 Scholarship Essay
On June 28, I arrived at my destination, suitcase in hand and heart full of excitement. The opportunity to live and study in the US had been a long-held aspiration from my childhood, yet I had not fully anticipated the extent to which this experience would alter the course of my life.
During the initial period of my relocation to the US, I was profoundly impressed by the sheer scale and diversity of the country. However, as time progressed, I began to experience a sense of dislocation and a lack of integration within my new surroundings. I recall my inaugural day at the university when I found myself in a classroom populated by students engaged in discourse and utilizing idiomatic expressions that were unfamiliar to me. The pace of the classes was rapid, and I found it challenging to comprehend the professor's explanations, even with an intermediate level of English, which I used as a third language. At the end of the day, I sat for an hour and reflected on my situation. I recognized two possible courses of action: either I could intensify my efforts and persevere or concede defeat at this point.
I encountered several situations that tested my determination. Whether dealing with stress or managing time, each scenario demanded resilience. On top of being a full-time student, I was also working full-time. Furthermore, this situation was accompanied by a considerable degree of stress. I hadn't witnessed this phenomenon before. I opted for a proactive mindset rather than reactive; I began to anticipate and prepare myself, and planning for the unexpected became a new norm, allowing me to handle disruptions with greater ease and confidence. I have carefully prioritized tasks and created a weekly calendar.
Throughout this year, I had the opportunity to engage in experiences that evoked a profound emotional response, such as attending the States Fair. I had the chance to form connections with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, which proved instrumental in achieving a sense of equilibrium in my new environment while successfully concluding my academic term. It has facilitated the development of valuable skills, including adaptability and resilience, and enhanced my self-confidence. The insights gained during this period will continue to inform my future decisions, both academic and personal, as I venture beyond my comfort zone and embrace new perspectives.
