My dream to be a Forensic Scientist by Sophie - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

The vast world of science has introduced me to forensic science, more specifically, crime scene investigation (CSI). Forensic science is all about experimental learning, whether it be through crime scenes or laboratories. Although many post-educational schools don't offer forensic science as a major, I plan to first study Biology. Fortunately, majoring in biology will give me the opportunity to generalize within the studies of science, which encompass the fundamentals of forensic science. Along my career path, I then aim to specialize in crime scene investigation. This career involves lots of hands-on learning, which is the best way I gain understanding, so I look forward to being involved in investigative and analytical work. Through analyzing crime scenes, executing lab work, and collecting and analyzing evidence, I see myself developing within the range of these skills.
The impact of being a forensic scientist also absolutely motivated me to pursue this chosen career. Solving cases that may have gone unsolved and providing peace to the families of the victims is a main impact forensic science can provide. Like the missing case of Gabby Petito, it wasn’t known for a long time what had happened with the YouTube vlogger. Although her body was found a week later, the cause of death was unknown. But with the help of forensic science, an autopsy was conducted where more evidence and details were brought to light. Unfortunately, not every case is found with the same opportunity of having in-depth investigations. This leads to communities experiencing criminal injustice, but I believe this career path can then offer help towards the impacted communities.
No matter the outcome, forensic science offers me various opportunities to leave a positive impact on communities, families, and society.
