Education Equals to Power by Sophie - November 2023 Scholarship Essay

Many people attend college to acquire new skills or to pursue their careers they have been dreaming about. So have I as it would be my dream to simultaneously pursue forensic science, dance, and fashion design. Colleges are places that offer various interesting careers that motivate one to find what they want to pursue in life. Which is also stressful as there can be so many options one can choose from. But college can give me various opportunities in life which can open the doors and help me build the pathway of my life.
My first and biggest reason why I want to go to college is to experience all the opportunities that may be available and given to me, what I can learn from them, and how these lessons can be applied to how I will live my life in the future. Some opportunities that may be offered to me during college can be job opportunities that will help me out financially, gaining social networks, and preparing me for the career I end up choosing. Alongside, coming from a child who comes from parents who weren’t able to finish their college education, having the many opportunities that are given to me, especially living in Los Angeles, it feels as if it is my duty to take advantage of these opportunities. Just like my parents, many people around the world aren’t able to have these opportunities. This gives me the sense that I am pursuing and finishing my parents' and other kids' dreams as they lack the opportunity to pursue those them.
Overall, taking these educational advantages results in achieving power. I want to be able to showcase my power for my family, the people without educational opportunities, and for myself by using it to become the person I want to be. By using this power, I am also able to speak out for the people who, unfortunately, do not have a voice in society. Having the knowledge I will gain in college serves as a source of power as I can spread my knowledge, help others, or use it for the greater good by helping create a better future that many of us aspire to have. So in order to be able to showcase this power, going to college would be my first step in pursuing this goal.
