Leadership as a Music Educator by Sophia - April 2026 Scholarship Essay

My career goal is to become a choir director that embodies what it means to be a music educator who leads with purpose, accountability, and empathy. I aspire to teach a High school choir while also providing voice lessons and remain a performer in community organizations. Through these roles, I hope to develop students who are strong musicians while also becoming confident leaders that prioritize collaboration, commitment, and accountability.

My passion for leadership in music truly developed when I got to high school. Through my directors, I learned that effective leadership extends beyond musical talent; it requires communication, organization, and the ability to motivate your peers through your struggle. Seeing these models in choir and band motived me to become a Section Leader in both organizations and eventually become Drum Major in my band. Through these opportunities I got to deepen my passion for education, commitment, and seeing the people around me succeed.

As a future choir director, I plan to lead ensembles that prioritize musical excellence while still understanding the importance of personal growth. A choral setting provides students with structured opportunities to take responsibility, work together, and support one another towards a shared goal. I want to intentionally cultivate student leaders in my choir who take ownership of their learning by encouraging accountability, mentorship, and peer support.

In addition I plan to offer private voice lessons to instill positive habits in individual's performance. Through this one-on-one instruction I can guide students in setting personal goals, developing healthy vocal technique, and building self-discipline to set the standard for the rest of my choir. This personalized approach creates the perfect opportunity for students to practice pushing themselves, ask questions, and make connections so they can create their own way to lead.

Continuing to perform in choirs is also an important component to my leadership approach. To assure myself and my students, constantly getting new information to build on top of my personal expertise will transform my skill and leadership to the next level. Showcasing life long learning, dedication, and adaptability to lead by example will reinforce what I seek to instill in my students.

Pursuing a degree in Music Education will provide me the academic and practical foundation necessary to become the best teacher I can be. Conducting, vocal pedagogy, and educational methods will equip me with the skills needed to communicate with diverse learners to set expectations clearly. Performance experiences and student teaching will give me a change to practice in a real world setting.

Ultimately, my goal is to serve as a leader who uses Music Education to inspire confidence, responsibility, and most importantly, create more leaders.
