Growing out of San Marcos by Sophia - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

My hometown is what every small town is considered. Everyone knows each other, having kids with their high school sweetheart, and raising their own to attend their alma mater. Nothing is wrong with that; I just knew from a young age that I wanted more than that. I want to be successful and see everything outside this twenty-mile radius of a town.
Graduating high school with an associate degree was a big deal for me and my family. I felt accomplished when I walked the stage. It gave me a rush that I could do anything if I tried to push myself to improve. With that being said, my next goal is to receive my bachelor's and master's degree within the next four years.
I plan to receive my bachelor's with a major in exercise in kinesiology specializing in coaching and a minor in forensic science. I know that the two do not go together, but coaching has always been a dream of mine, although I may not be doing that my entire life. With a minor in forensic science, I would like to complete a master’s in forensic science to become a forensic psychologist later on. Since I have my associate degree already, I only need two more years for my undergraduate degree, so I want to continue school with the two years it takes to complete a master's degree. Crime and analysis intrigue me. I enjoy watching shows such as Criminal Minds and documentaries. Having a deep interest is what persuaded me to be able to do something in a similar field myself.
I always looked to do something I love and be successful rather than hate my job to get good money. Taking steps toward being a forensic psychologist will allow me to have both. Providing for a family is something I have always dreamed of, and I cannot wait for what is to come in the future. Education is a big thing for me; it can help me become successful, which is why I have big goals for the coming years.
