A Win- Win by Sophia - December 2020 Scholarship Essay

I might be obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy. It could be the addicting, soapy appeal of a medical drama. Mainly, though, I am drawn to the heart pounding, blood pumping shock-inducing experience the characters get as they battle against all odds to save patients' lives. I derive ridiculous joy in evaluating their life saving techniques, many of which I have learned in my time as a swim instructor and lifeguard. Through countless hours of training, I have practiced everything from basic first aid to CPR to spinal injury protocol.

No one thinks they will ever have to put this training to work, but on a trip to California last year,I did. After an elderly woman fell and hit her head on a pool deck, I sprang into action. I stabilized her head and neck and checked her vitals while keeping her comfortable as we waited for help. Thankfully, she was not seriously injured.

In this short yet intense period of time, I discovered some new things about myself. First, I am able to remain calm, manage others and recall important information in high pressure situations. Secondly, I enjoy learning in non-traditional settings.

This past year, 2020, I had plans to become a junior member of Chicago Fire and Rescue, and train to become a licensed EMT. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a wrench in those plans. In 2021, I will try again and will even expand my goals. I hope to train with Chicago Fire and Rescue and in my new college setting, I will become a member of its emergency medical interest Group. Within these programs, I will be able to further develop my medical training and give back to my communities, all while having my own heart pounding, blood pumping, shock-inducing experiences. Sounds like a win-win to me.
