My Journey to Becoming a Cosmetic Dentist by Somer - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

Greetings to the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship committee! I would first like to thank you for considering me as an applicant for this scholarship. My name is Somer Hill, and I am a rising senior attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. As for my family, I have been the first to attend a university, the first to complete an internship at an ivy league, and hopefully, a soon-to-be graduate. My education is something that I hold near and dear to my heart. I have always found a love for learning. My grandparents were the ones who encouraged me as a child to pursue a passion in STEM. Unfortunately, they were not given the same opportunities as I was to be able to make their academic dreams become their reality. So, in a way I feel that my degree will not only represent my accomplishment, but the accomplishments of my grandparents for making difficult sacrifices to help me become a first-generation graduate.

With a degree in Biology, I plan to receive an offer in medical or pharmaceutical sales as a new graduate. My internship at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health has revealed to me the hardships that underrepresented minorities face. Being able to give them access to essential medical advances would be more than an act of service to me. Eventually, I plan to complete dental school and open my own practice. Cosmetic dentistry is my passion, but I am aware of the costs of attending graduate programs. Working in medical sales will provide me with the resources to help fund my long-term goal of becoming a dentist!

Though my plan may not be ideal due to financial circumstances, I believe that the cards that I have been dealt with and how I plan to pursue it are what makes my individuality and essence shine through. Again, thank you for giving me the opportunity to receive this award!
